A couple of weeks ago we said a Happy 1st Birthday to our beautiful german shepherd Poppy. It seems like only yesterday that we brought her home to be part of the family, and she’s growing up to be the most cheeky, stubborn, and smartest doggy we’ve ever known. Time just flies by dosen’t it!
She can be a lot of hard work sometimes (as comes with the breed) and if we’re completely honest, we had a few love and hate her moments with her whilst she was quite young. Purely from misbehaviour, like nibbling, scratching the paint off the kitchen walls, and keeping us up during the night. She still can be very mischievous! A lot of it stems from being so intelligent! But she’s been the most wonderful blessing. As much as we adore golden retrievers, when Jessie passed away we were pretty certain we didn’t want to go for the same breed straight after as it was too painful. A german shepherd (Poppy) couldn’t have been more different! German shepherds are very unique and definitely one on their own, as we’ve learned in the last 12 months.
When we go out for walks with her, surprisingly there are a lot of people that seem to be quite wary of her because the breed is wrongly mistaken for being not very nice, but it couldn’t be further from the truth… at least with Poppy anyway! She’s one of the most friendly dogs you’ll ever come across, and every time she sees somebody, she wants to say hi and can be quite offended if they don’t say hello back! She even does a little dance like a deer on her walks when she’s happy, which is lovely to see. 🙂 We’ve learned the case is that it’s not usually the dog thats the problem, but the owner. Of course, you’ll get the dogs that are the exception having come from traumatic backgrounds, but dogs will become like their owner, or how their owner treats them. When a dog grows up in a loving, gentle home/environment, that is how they’ll turn out to be.
We’re so thankful for her and are looking forward to all of the wonderful years to come. Especially her lovely cuddles on the settee, even if she does decide to sit on us!
